A New Dog Walking Business Set to Launch in Causeway Coast and Glens Through USEL's Empower Programme

Walkeez Dog Walking And Pet Check-In Services - Ballymoney

In an inspiring career change, local resident Nick McCabe is set to launch his new dog walking and pet check-in service, Walkeez, in Ballymoney, bringing his passion for dogs to the forefront. After over 25 years in the motor industry, Nick decided to pursue his love of all things canine, transforming a lifelong passion into a fulfilling new career.

The spark for this change came when Nick adopted a rescue dog from Benvarden Kennels in Derrykeighan. Their furry family member became Nick’s constant companion, and together they explored the stunning beaches, forests, and rivers of the North Coast. This experience strengthened Nick's love for dogs and ultimately inspired him to take the plunge into the world of pet car. In 2024, Nick sought help from the Empower Programme, an initiative run by USEL (Ulster Supported Employment and Learning). USEL is dedicated to helping people with disabilities or health conditions find meaningful employment, and Nick’s dream of launching his own business was supported every step of the way.

Through the Empower Programme, funded by the Department for Communities, USEL worked closely with Nick to bring his vision to life. The programme helped Nick secure mentorship opportunities, provided business training, identified entrepreneurial schemes and resources, and connected him with key business contacts. USEL’s Employment Support Officer, Louise, praised Nick for his dedication: “Nick has been very proactive in all business development activities and has impressed both me and Anne Morrison from Enterprise NI. His business is already well ahead in ensuring it meets the needs of pet guardians and their beloved dogs.”

Nick is now fully certified in pet sitting, dog walking, and canine first aid. He has developed a professional set-up, including a business plan, pre-contract questionnaire for potential clients, comprehensive customer contracts, and business insurance. What’s more, he’s established a unique selling point: offering a 10% discount for both emergency services staff and elderly clients, recognising their important contributions to the community.

When asked what he has enjoyed most about this entrepreneurial journey, Nick said: “It’s been an exciting journey and I’ve met so many supportive people along the way. The pet professional community is incredibly welcoming, and I’ve already built great relationships with industry professionals such as; Catherine Haughey Freelance Marketing Services, Clare from K9Walker, and Ella from Walks and Paws Ribble Valley. I already feel part of this wonderful community of animal lovers.” Nick is most excited about working with the dogs themselves: “That’s the best part! I feel honoured to look after people’s very special family members. It’s a privilege.”

USEL is particularly proud to have supported Nick in this venture. As part of their Empower Programme, they aim to help people with disabilities or health conditions achieve their goals, whether in traditional employment or self-employment. USEL’s Empower Programme Manager said: “We were delighted to assist Nick in setting up Walkeez Dog Walking and Pet Check-In Services. We offer similar support to anyone who wants to become self-employed or dreams of starting their own business. If you or someone you know is ready to take that step, our team is here to help make it happen.”

Nick’s Walkeez service will officially launch on Monday, 7th October, offering dog walking and pet check-in services to pet owners in Ballymoney and surrounding areas. Each service begins with a free meet-and-greet, ensuring that both you and your dog are comfortable before any services are provided.
